Our rankings are designed to help readers make a safer, more informed shortlist. This page explains what we measure, how we use evidence and how commercial relationships are kept separate from editorial decisions.
Our evidence levels
- Hands-on tested: the wheelchair has been physically assessed and the review explains who tested it, when, how and under what conditions.
- Expert assessed: a suitably qualified professional has reviewed relevant design, fit or clinical considerations.
- Research reviewed: conclusions are based on manufacturer manuals, published specifications, retailer information and other cited sources. This is never presented as hands-on testing.
Core scoring areas
- Fit and usability: seat sizes, adjustability, access, transfers, propulsion and attendant controls.
- Transport: total weight, removable parts, heaviest lifting weight and folded dimensions.
- Comfort and support: upholstery, back support, armrests, footrests and available positioning options.
- Build and safety: brakes, stability, stated user-weight limit, conformity information and instructions.
- Ownership: warranty, spare parts, servicing and expected maintenance.
- Value: usefulness and ownership support relative to typical UK pricing—not simply the lowest advertised price.
How Top 3, Top 5 and Top 10 lists work
A product only earns a place when it is suitable for the list’s stated use case and enough evidence is available to compare it fairly. Each list defines its audience, minimum criteria, scoring weights and the date on which prices and specifications were checked. We explain meaningful disadvantages and identify who should not buy each option.
Commercial independence

Corrections and updates
Wheelchair specifications, availability and prices change. Material reviews show their latest reviewed date. When an error is identified, we correct it promptly and record substantial changes that could affect a recommendation.
